Maxey House

The values I used to guide me in creating this commission I gleaned from Bob and Carol Maxey. The pride and joy that was evident in their discussion of horsemanship, their granddaughter, and their home led me to appreciate how deeply intertwined the successes of the present are with the strengths Bob and Carol bring from their past. Thus, the sculpture conveys this metaphor by predicating the height and grandeur with which the family is catapulted at its upper reaches on the primal foundations of the past. The craftsmanship gets more meticulous as one works up the sculpture. Strong, broad grandparent rocks form the backdrop on which all is supported. The circular form and primal hue of the tower are a metaphor for Bob and Carol’s cohesiveness from which the village looks down and draws its spiritual strength. The village is the community they have built. Its inhabitants are those who draw sustenance from their passion, love, generosity, friendship, and vision. Above the village is the granary. It is that carrot in the sky, that jumping bar raised another notch, the perfect ride. It supplies the stars on which the community feeds. Finally, there is Sentinel Point. This is where Bob, Carol and I go to glimpse the promise of the future.
